Connor Hughes discusses Aaron Rodgers minicamp absence on the Awful Announcing Podcast

Many around the sports world have been quite critical of Jets star quarterback Aaron Rodgers skipping out on the team’s mandatory minicamp. But during a recent appearance on the Awful Announcing Podcast, Jets reporter Connor Hughes shared a different perspective.

In a conversation with AA’s Brandon Contes, Hughes shared that he believes Rodgers’ absence ultimately won’t end up impacting the team.

“Here is my thing. When I think of a distraction, I look at it in two different ways,” said Hughes. “A distraction to me is something that is going to impact the team. Impact the team long-term and impact the team this coming season. I don’t see this impacting the Jets and what they are going to accomplish this coming year in any way, shape, or form. If they are going to go on a playoff run and maybe even reach the Super Bowl, missing two days of mandatory minicamp isn’t going to impact that at all.

“If the Jets miss the playoffs and everyone gets fired this year, it’s not going to be because Aaron Rodgers missed two days of mandatory minicamp. It’s likely going to be because of injuries or that the offense just didn’t come together under Nathaniel Hackett. However, this was a headline. It was noteworthy, it was newsworthy. It was unnecessary attention that didn’t necessarily have to be there. It didn’t have to be a headline in mid-June.” So, a distraction? I don’t necessarily know if that’s the word I would use. But it certainly was a newsworthy headline.”

At 40 years of age and 19 NFL seasons under his belt, Rodgers surely doesn’t need a minicamp to get him prepared for the upcoming season. So chances are, Hughes will be correct and this will largely be inconsequential when it comes to the 2024-25 season for the Jets.
