Amari Cooper Green Bay Packers wide receiver Amari Rodgers (8) bobbles a punt return against the Dallas Cowboys during their football game Sunday, November 13, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Dan Powers/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin Apc Packvscowboys 1113220119djp

One of the biggest issues plaguing the Green Bay Packers in the 2022 NFL season has been their receivers and ball handling. That situation finally cost someone their job as the team released Amari Rodgers following a game in which a costly fumble, his fifth of the season, almost cost them the game.

One day after head coach Matt LaFleur was noncommittal about Rodgers‘ status as a punt returner, it appears that he not only lost that role but his entire role with the team.

Rodgers’ five fumbles, four of which came on punt returns, are the most by any non-quarterback in the league this year, per ESPN Stats & Information. The team’s third-round pick in 2021 averaged 8.3 yards per punt return on the season and had four catches for 50 yards as a wide receiver.

This Rodgers clearly didn’t do much to curry favor with the other one on the team, Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback had some particularly harsh comments about the young player a few weeks back, so it’s perhaps not too surprising that the number of mistakes he was allowed to make was pretty small from there on out.

At 4-6, the Packers were in desperate need of that victory and need to put many more together if they want to make the playoffs this season. While we wait to see if they can do it, plenty of people around the NFL world had some thoughts on Amari Rodgers and Green Bay’s decision to cut him.
