Sometimes, when a team selects a quarterback in the NFL Draft, they let him sit behind a more veteran quarterback for a short time while he learns and develops. But that does not sound like the plan for new Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson.

During a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Indianapolis Colts team owner Jim Irsay made it clear that he thinks Richardson will “get better by playing” after the team selected him with the No. 4 overall pick on Thursday night.

“I think it’s important,” Irsay said according to ESPN. “You get better by playing. I mean, practice and preseason games and watching in a quarterback room, that’s great. But, man, I’ll tell you, he’d get better by playing, and it’s something that it is really important. Because, again, his development [is] so much of a key to the franchise’s future. It is the critical key.

“Everyone knows that him developing into an outstanding, great player in this league is going to determine where we go and how far we go and how long we have excellence. So, everything’s going to be based around that.”

It sounds like we can expect to see Richardson on the field for the team early in his NFL career – perhaps even for the first game.
