Anthony Richardson is in the middle of an open competition for the Indianapolis Colts’ starting quarterback job. Unfortunately for Richardson, his general manager, Chris Ballard, seems to believe that Richardson still has a lot of growing to do.
“I just think eventually Anthony’s going to be who we think he can be,” the general manager said, via Zak Keefer of The Athletic. “I still believe that. Whether that’s this year or next, I don’t know when it’s going to happen.”
However, Richardson seems to be undeterred, as he is letting everyone, including Jones, know that he is still operating as if he is the starter.
“I’ve just got to work as if I am going to be the Day One starter,” Richardson said, according to Pro Football Talk. “Regardless of what decision they make, I’m still working, trying to improve. They’re going to make the best decision for this team, and that’s what we need.
“This team wants to win the Super Bowl. It’s not about me, it’s about the team. I’m just working as if I am the starter, and if I don’t get the job, you know, glory to God.”
Fans reacted to the incredibly bold statement on social media.
“Chris Ballard about to give him a top 5 contract just to show that he drafts ppl that stay in the (league),” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Mindset over media quotes. Love Richardson owning QB1 expectations straight up—matches what I saw in his rookie film before the injury,” someone else added.
If Richardson doesn’t win the job, it’ll be interesting to see if he ever starts again in the NFL.
