Baker Mayfield Heisman Trophy winner and former OU quarterback Baker Mayfield speaks to the crowd after a statue of him was unveiled Saturday outside Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman. cover main — crop in as needed

Baker Mayfield is officially a member of the Carolina Panthers. Along with competing to be the starting quarterback with a new team, he’s also got some other new experiences ahead of him, and that includes fast food staple Bojangles.

As part of his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Mayfield, who was traded from the Cleveland Browns last week, discussed some of the new things he was looking forward to eating now that he was in North Carolina. That’s when he made what some might consider a shocking omission.

“I’m looking forward to my first Bojangles meal. I haven’t had that yet,” said Mayfield. “But I’ve been told I need to do that as soon as possible. I’ll probably wait a little bit, it’s not exactly on the training camp diet, but, looking forward to it.”

Naturally, Bojangles fans had strong reactions to the news that Baker had yet to taste their chicken and pondered whether or not he’d be sponsored by the fast-food chain sooner than later.

If Mayfield can make good on his potential and turn the Panthers back into a playoff contender, all the while championing Bojangles, well, he might end up as a god in those parts.
