The Carolina Panthers made a somewhat shocking decision on Monday afternoon, releasing quarterback Baker Mayfield from the team just a few weeks after he retook the team’s starting quarterback job. The decision came just one day after the playoff-contending San Francisco 49ers lost starting Jimmy Garoppolo to an injury, leading many to believe that the Niners could attempt to sign Mayfield – but that might not be the case.

On Monday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about the potential that the team might sign Baker Mayfield to address their quarterback woes. While he didn’t deny a potential move, he did seem to indicate that’s not part of the plan.

“We look into everything,” Shanahan told reporters on Monday, according to 49erswebzone.com. “But that would surprise me right now, and we’ve got to discuss it this afternoon and stuff. I’ve always been a fan of his, but I feel real good about our players.”

Shanahan indicated that the team is comfortable with the team’s quarterback situation, which means playing rookie quarterback Brock Purdy going forward. The Niners also called up veteran Josh Johnson from the practice squad to serve as Purdy’s backup.

“We’ll look into everything, but I feel pretty good with where we’re at right now,” Shanahan said.
