After signing P.J. Walker to serve as Justin Fields’ backup, the Chicago Bears have reportedly made another move at the quarterback position. The Bears released veteran QB Trevor Siemian, according to the league’s transaction wire.

The Bears elected to part ways with the 31-year-old Siemian, who played in two games last season. Siemian started against the New York Jets in a 31-10 drubbing in place of an injured Justin Fields, despite injuring his oblique muscle in pregame warmups. On the season, he completed 57.7% of his passes for 184 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

After starting 24 games with the Denver Broncos, Siemian has become a journeyman, leaning into the veteran quarterback role. Since his Denver days, Siemian has spent time with the Jets, Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and New Orleans Saints. While he managed just an 0-4 record, Siemian had a pretty successful stint in New Orleans, as he completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 1,154 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions.

We’ll have to see if Siemian draws interest as a backup on the free-agent market. With the veteran quarterback market rather bleak, including the likes of Carson Wentz, Teddy Bridgewater, Mason Rudolph, Joe Flacco, and Marcus Mariota — to name a few — Siemian could present himself as a low-cost option that could play a mentor role to a young QB, as he did with Fields in Chicago.
