The New England Patriots have a clear starting quarterback in Mac Jones, but it doesn’t sound like head coach Bill Belichick is very happy with the team’s depth behind him.
This week, the New England Patriots claimed former West Virginia Mountaineers star quarterback Will Grier off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad to provide depth to the team at the quarterback position and serve as the team’s emergency third quarterback.
“We signed Will Grier off the Cincinnati practice squad and he’ll be the third quarterback this week,” Belichick said according to Pro Football Talk.
But Belichick made it clear that the team wants to see what Grier can do during practice in hopes that he can help solidify the depth at the position. Because Belichick seemed to have a pretty brutal assessment of the quarterback position behind Jones.
“We want to work with him,” Belichick said. “We need depth at that position.”
Currently, the team’s backup option is Bailey Zappe, who served as the backup quarterback for Mac Jones all of last season and seemed to challenge him for the starting role at one point.
It will be interesting to see how the team’s quarterback situation plays out for the rest of the season behind Jones.
