Buffalo Bills fans were not happy with several of head coach Sean McDermott’s decisions Sunday, but one play at the end of the third quarter really riled the Bills Mafia.

Facing a 4th-and-2 at their own 20, down by 14 points, McDermott opted to punt. That’s what the analytics suggested at that point, but Bills fans weren’t having it.

It did not help matters the Cincinnati Bengals took possession after the punt and marched down for a field goal to take a 17-point lead with 11:22 remaining.

Bills fans vented their frustration, and impartial NFL observers questioned the decision.

The Maybe Next Year Bills Twitter account tweeted, “Even as a big McDermott defender, I have to say the punt at the end of Q2 was questionable, the FG at the end of the opening 3Q drive was bad, and the punt on 4th and 2 trailing by 14 is nearly indefensible.”

“Have to start questioning whether McDermott has what it takes to reach the next level. Merely making the playoffs is no longer good enough,” tweeted a fan.

4th and 2 and you punt, if the Bills do lose this which is looking increasingly likely, that was the death knell,” noted another fan.

McDermott also came under fire for a decision to punt in the closing seconds of the first half.
