A huge name has emerged as the potential frontrunner for the open Denver Broncos head coaching job.

9News Denver reporter Mike Klis reported on Thursday afternoon that DeMeco Ryans has emerged as a top candidate for the Broncos job. Ryans is currently the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.

“San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans has emerged as a top candidate to become the Denver Broncos‘ next head coach,” Klis wrote. He continued, “Other Broncos’ head coach candidates remain in the mix including Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, former New Orleans Saints’ head coach Sean Payton and former Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Jim Caldwell, according to a source. But Ryans appears to be a top choice.”

Several NFL teams have already interviewed Ryans this offseason. The Houston Texans “covet” Ryans according to Klis. When he played, he did so with the Texans, where he won the 2006 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. So it makes sense beyond his coaching prowess.

Ryans has led a ferocious 49er defense this season. They have been the backbone of the team in their ongoing 12-game winning streak. A lot of great talent is on the team, but they’re also extremely well-coached. Ryans is a big reason why. It’s easy to see why a team like Denver would be enamored with him.
