Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett gave a positive update on injured quarterback Russell Wilson Monday.

Wilson left Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs after suffering a blow to the head on a tackle early in the fourth quarter. After leaving the game, he was diagnosed with a concussion.

Hackett said Wilson “felt great” Monday, but he tempered the update by saying the team is proceeding with caution.

“Russell is in the concussion protocol,” Hackett said (via Denver’s KMGH). “We’re gonna do everything the way the medical doctors say, the independent doctors. His safety is by far the No. 1 most important thing. We’ll continually talk to him, to everybody else about that, and make sure we do the right thing.

“He felt great today when we saw him. He looked great, but we want to be sure that we do everything the right way.”

Before being sidelined Sunday, Wilson had played one of his best games of the season, passing for 247 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 57 yards. He rallied the Broncos from a 27-0 deficit, although they ultimately lost 34-28.

In an NFL season in which one of the biggest themes has been player safety and concussions, as the result of Tua Tagovailoa’s unfortunate experiences, every team is looking at concussions in a new light.

Brett Rypien would be in line for the start at quarterback against the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday if Wilson is not cleared from the concussion protocol.
