Some athletes are very protective of their jersey numbers. When a new signing comes in and finds someone else has that number, things can get interesting. Tom Brady has worn #12 his entire career but now he’s with the Buccaneers, he encountered someone else wearing that same number.

Pro bowl wide receiver Chris Godwin could’ve made a haul from Brady but instead Godwin offered to give Brady the #12 and Godwin #14.

According to the Buccaneers, Godwin offered the number due to the respect he has for his new QB and sought nothing in return.

“Obviously, if he doesn’t want it or isn’t making a big deal about it, I’m definitely going to keep it,” said Godwin. “But we’ll see how that goes. I think just out of respect for what he’s done, what he’s accomplished, just kind of the career he’s built for himself…you’ve got to kind of lean into that respect, you know?”

This is a pretty nice and unselfish gesture from Godwin and I’m sure that’ll help their relationship going forward. While Godwin didn’t ask for anything in return, it’s probably a gesture Brady will remember and appreciate so if that results in a few more throws heading Godwin’s way, it may help him on the stat sheet and in his bank account in the years ahead.
