Just two days after announcing they had waived him in an effort to get to the 53-man roster threshold, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed quarterback John Wolford.

Wolford will be placed on Tampa’s practice squad.

Wolford has had quite an interesting career. After a four-year stint at Wake Forest where he set the school’s single-season passing yards and touchdown records (since broken by Sam Hartman) in his senior year, landing Wolford a Second Team All-ACC nod.

After going undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, Wolford signed with the New York Jets but was cut before the end of the preseason.

He would go on to be one of the best players in the Alliance of American Football’s short history, as he threw for 1,617 yards and a league-high 14 touchdowns in eight games with the Arizona Hotshots before the league ceased operations. NFL teams took note of Wolford’s performance, however, and he ended up on the Rams’ practice squad for the 2019 season.

By the end of the 2020 season, Wolford found himself in a unique position. After an injury took Jared Goff out, Wolford started Los Angeles’ week 17 game against the Arizona Cardinals. He went 22-38 for 231 yards to lead the Rams to an 18-7 win, clinching a playoff spot. Wolford started the Wild Card Game against the Seattle Seahawks but saw his day end in the first quarter after getting injured on a Jamal Adams hit.

Once the Rams acquired Matthew Stafford, Wolford became the backup and played sparingly in 2021 and 2022, winning Super Bowl LVI with Los Angeles.
