Caleb Williams has a new head coach, former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Williams opened his rookie season with Matt Eberflus at the mantle, before he was relieved of his duties mid-season.
Now, Williams is discussing his experience under Eberflus, and he is painting a bleak picture.
“How [Eberflus] handled it at that time, for that game, was, I think, one of the things that throughout the locker room people talked about and were annoyed by,” Williams said of Chicago’s Hail Mary loss to the Washington Commanders, via the Chicago Sun-Times.
It gets worse, too, with Williams saying he was reduced to tears.
“When I got home, I got in my bed, I just dropped a few tears,” Williams said.
“I think those losses were pretty important for me and my growth,” Williams told the magazine. “To go on a losing streak, to be in this position and be at the helm of it, was definitely important for me. Just being able to see how I need to be when times are bad. . . .
“I’m going to work my tail off to never be in that situation again.”
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“How basic yet the rooke was playing all bad three quarters then gain the lead just to fumble the ball. Then that cornerback and flus got scapegoated blamed for the lost,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Or how about the players take accountability & not troll the fans when the ball is in play,” someone else added.
“I bet that 26 yards Caleb threw in the first half annoyed them too,” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Willaism is able to turn things around with Johnson calling the shots.
