The Carolina Panthers have a new starting quarterback after former Cleveland Browns starter Baker Mayfield earned the team’s starting quarterback spot after beating out Sam Darnold in a preseason battle. However, the Panthers now find themselves a little short at the position after rookie Matt Corrall suffered a season-ending injury this week and Darnold went down with an injury during Friday night’s game.

With only two healthy quarterbacks available, Panthers head coach Matt Rhule was asked about the possibility of bringing back former NFL MVP Cam Newton to add depth to the position. Rhule didn’t exactly shoot the idea down but said it might be a little too early to begin that discussion.

“[General manager Scott Fitterer] and I will talk about that,” Rule told reporters after Friday’s game, in a video shared by Carolina Blitz on Twitter. “Obviously, Cam would have to weigh in on that. There’d be a lot of things that we’d have to look at. You guys know my feelings on Cam. My time with him was fantastic. But probably too early right now to say much about that.”

Last season, Newton played in eight games with Carolina in which he passed for 684 yards and four touchdowns while throwing five interceptions.
