Cam Ward doesn’t hold back about Titans struggles

The Tennessee Titans are looking to change the culture of their franchise with rookie quarterback Cam Ward under center in 2025. And on Wednesday, Ward didn’t hold back from criticizing how his team has played to this point in training camp.

Ward comes to Tennessee with a ton of potential after an unbelievable season at the University of Miami where he threw for 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.

Still, there are some questions to be answered about what kind of player Ward will be at the NFL level. And in particular, whether he has what it takes to be a great leader at the NFL level.

On Wednesday, Ward showed off some of his leadership abilities by offering a harsh depiction of his team, explaining how he believes that the team is “very mid” at this point.

“I just think we’re very mid right now,” Ward told reporters on Wednesday during his press conference. “From my position to up front to the receivers position. At the end of the day, it all starts with me. I just don’t think we’re at where we need to be, but we’ve got a little bit of time. Every day we get better as a whole. We’re a young team, but that’s no excuse.”

Some may see this as an example of poor leadership, putting the team on blast publicly like he did. But it is an important quality for any quarterback to hold their team, and himself, accountable. Ward certainly did that here.

Given the fact that the Titans are coming off a 3-14 season in 2024, it’s not exactly shocking to see that the Titans organization is going through some growing pains with a new quarterback under center.

But hopefully, for Ward’s case, the Titans show some real growth in the next few weeks as we approach the start of preseason and later the start of the 2025 NFL regular season. Because if the same “mid” team that Ward is describing shows up against the Broncos, a postseason team in 2024, it could certainly be an ugly sight to see for Titans fans.
