The Carolina Panthers found themselves in need of a new practice squad quarterback this week when Jake Luton was claimed to the New Orleans Saints active roster, and it sounds like they’re turning to a former Texas A&M Aggies college star.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Carolina Panthers brought in former Texas A&M Aggies star quarterback Kellen Mond for a tryout on Tuesday as they looked to add some more depth and young talent to their quarterback position.

Kellen Mond was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He saw action in one game as a rookie, completing 2 of his 3 passes for five yards. Following his rookie season, he was cut by the Vikings and eventually signed with the Browns where he spent the entire 2022 season, though he never played a snap with the team.

While Mond is unlikely to play a long-term key role for Carolina even if he is signed, there’s a chance he could be active for the team this week.

Bryce Young could miss this week’s game with an ankle injury, leaving backup quarterback Andy Dalton to take over as the starter. When this happened last week, Luton served as the backup to Dalton.

But with Luton now in New Orleans, whoever the team signs as their practice squad quarterback will likely be the team’s backup quarterback until Young returns from his injury.
