Now that Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson have been paid, it’s only a matter of time before the Chargers have to pay Justin Herbert. Herbert, along with Joe Burrow, are the two quarterbacks next in line for a massive payday.
And while Herbert said Thursday there is no timeline for an extension, the Chargers are all in on making sure he remains their quarterback well into the future.
That was clear when head coach Brandon Staley said last month that the talks were “ongoing” with Herbert’s representation. It was also clear when the team prioritized getting Herbert some additional help in the draft on Thursday, as the Chargers came away with TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnson as their first-round pick.
During the Chargers’ draft party on Thursday, Herbert touched on those contract extension talks. He has full faith in his agents and the Chargers to get a long-term deal done, but he doesn’t seem to be in any rush for one to be completed.
“I’m kind of left out of those negotiations, and I think my job now, my focus is to be the best quarterback that I can be and to rehab my shoulder,” Herbert said, via ESPN. “I’ve got complete faith in the Chargers organization and the front office.
“They’ve done such a great job of taking care of us as players, and I’ve loved to be a part of this team, being a part of this organization, and it’s kind of beyond my control of as to what happens now. I’m just doing everything I can that I can control.”
Herbert, who underwent surgery this offseason to repair a torn labrum, is clearly focused on his rehab, rather than contract talks. Still, it’s only a matter of time before he becomes one of the highest-paid players at his position in the league.
