The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to defeat their playoff demons and make a sustained run behind the pairing of star quarterback Justin Herbert and head coach Jim Harbaugh, who joined the franchise after winning the national championship with the Michigan Wolverines.

Recently, Harbaugh spoke about the team around Herbert needing to elevate its game to the level of its quarterback.

“This is the truth, Justin Herbert’s biggest weakness is all of those that he’s counting on on offense — coaches, offensive line, playmakers, receivers, running backs — to get up to his level,” Harbaugh said.

“I wake up every day to try to get to his level. . . . I see him at the level, just the highest level as a quarterback. First five seasons, nobody’s thrown for more yards in the history of the NFL, and everything he does is, you just don’t change a thing, but whatever it is, conditioning, it’s too easy. Everything we do, we try to pull him back, because you never have to talk him into doing anything. He’s been in here every day.”

However, Harbaugh knows that health isn’t guaranteeed for anyone in the NFL and that should something happen to Herbert, backup Trey Lance will be expected to step in and compete at a high level.

To this end, Harbaugh made a major announcement on Tuesday, that should ensure Lance receives the necessary reps to prepare himself for the regular season should his number get called.

“Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh announces Trey Lance will start the HOF game,” reported Chargers insider Alex Insdorf.

It’ll be interesting to see how Lance performs while serving as the starter.
