While Justin Herbert is obviously going to be the starting quarterback this season for the Los Angeles Chargers, one of the potential options to back him up has reportedly been his way back to the team.
Los Angeles made the move to cut quarterback Max Duggan, as NFL teams trimmed their rosters to get to 53 players before Tuesday’s deadline. But after clearing waivers, the former TCU Horned Frogs QB and Heisman finalist is signing with the Charges practice squad, reports NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

The Chargers selected Duggan with their final pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, late in the seventh round.
While he was unable to beat out Easton Stick, who will serve as the No. 2 QB and direct backup to Herbert, the 2022 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year will have the opportunity to learn and develop on Los Angeles’ practice squad. He’ll also serve as an additional depth piece, who already has familiarity with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s offense.
Max Duggan was a key contributor to TCU’s success last season. He helped the team reach the College Football Playoff, led them to a win over the Michigan Wolverines in the Fiesta Bowl and finished the season as one of four Heisman Trophy finalists.
In 15 games, Duggan completed 267 of 419 passes for 3,698 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also only threw eight interceptions.
