Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow won the Heisman Trophy and College Football Playoff championship in 2019 with the LSU Tigers, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, led the Bengals to an AFC title in the 2021 NFL season, and has led Cincinnati to a 10-4 record (and six straight wins) so far in the 2022 NFL season.

Naturally, Burrow has drawn comparisons over the last few years to many of the greats that have played quarterback. But NFL on CBS analyst Charles Davis went to a different sport to offer a Burrow comparison.

During an appearance Thursday with Adam Schein on CBS Sports Network’s Time to Schein, Davis said, “[Joe Burrow] is Wayne Gretzky on the football field.”

Davis explained more on the Burrow-Gretzky comparison: “What I mean by that, Adam, is he sees things moves ahead before other people do. Remember, Wayne Gretzky’s father Walter told him, ‘You’re not the biggest and the fastest. You have to see the game differently and be there before others.’ And he would send the puck off in their rink to different spots, and tell Wayne to make sure you go where the puck’s going to and up, not where the puck is going… Joe Burrow is similar that way in how he sees the game, and he gets there before other people do. And so I say he’s Wayne Gretzky-esque in that way.”

That’s certainly a unique comparison, but one that makes a lot of sense for the reasons Davis said.

Davis will work as the color commentator alongside play-by-play man Ian Eagle for the Bengals’ game against the New England Patriots on Saturday for CBS.
