The good news for the Kansas City Chiefs heading into Super Bowl LVII is that quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ high ankle sprain is improving. The bad news? There’s some kind of bug going around.

NFL Network’s James Palmer reported Wednesday that pass-rushing star Chris Jones is dealing with congestion and a sore throat. And Palmer added it “seemed like a few Chiefs players were battling a little something today.”

That’s the thing about these illnesses, they can spread from player to player, with everyone spending so much time together in close quarters. There would obviously be more cause for concern if Jones and his teammates were feeling this way on Friday or Saturday.

Yet sometimes the after-effects of these minor conditions can linger for a couple of days. It’s a situation worth monitoring heading up to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVII matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

This is where longtime fans will scoff at the concerns about sore throats and congestion and point out that Los Angeles Rams legend Jack Youngblood once played in a Super Bowl with a broken leg. Youngblood, now 81, said he’s proud of the way Mahomes has played through his injury.

“I’m so proud of this kid,” Youngblood said (via the Los Angeles Times). “His steadfastness. His determination. His leadership. his spirit. I mean every time he grabs that ball he wants to win no matter how he feels. I really admire that.”
