Days after they traded receiver Robbie Anderson to the Arizona Cardinals, the Carolina Panthers are sending another key skill player to the NFC West. It was announced on Thursday night that Christian McCaffrey has been sent to the San Francisco 49ers.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the news.

Schefter added that the 49ers are sending second, third and fourth-round picks in 2023 and a fifth-rounder in 2024 to Carolina.

McCaffrey, the two-time All-Pro running back, has 393 yards and two touchdowns on the ground this year, as well as 277 yards and another touchdown receiving this season.

Naturally, this trade caught the attention of the NFL world in a big way.

McCaffrey’s father, Ed McCaffrey played on the 49ers in 1994, when Mike Shanahan was the offensive coordinator. Shanahan became head coach of the Denver Broncos the following year, bringing Ed along with him. Now, Ed’s son, Christian, is playing for Mike’s son, San Francisco head coach, Kyle Shanahan.

For the 49ers, the reason for the move is obvious. McCaffrey’s a talented player and despite early-season inconsistencies on offense, San Francisco sits at 3-3, in a three-way tie atop the NFC West. The hope is clearly that McCaffrey can help provide a much-needed spark to the offense.

For Carolina, the reason is perhaps even more obvious. This move will help the Panthers get a better draft pick. Even with Anderson and McCaffrey, Carolina has the NFL’s worst record at 1-5 after six games. These players being gone will only help ensure that the Panthers will be in a position to draft Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Alabama’s Bryce Young, or one of the other top-tier quarterbacks figuring to be in 2023’s draft.
