The Cleveland Browns announced on Tuesday they that have hired Jim Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator. The Browns didn’t waste any time hiring Schwartz after dumping former defensive coordinator Joe Woods.

The 56-year-old had a five-year stint as head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2013. He has also been the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, and Tennessee Titans. His first NFL job was in Cleveland as a personnel scout in the 1990s. He was more recently an assistant on the Titans’ staff.

The Browns once again missed the playoffs and heads are starting to roll. Clearly, some of that blame falls squarely on the Browns’ poor defensive play. The team also had issues not only on the field but off it as well as the organization had to deal with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney who was dismissed from the team after criticizing the team and saying he is almost certain he won’t be back next year.

Clowney later apologized but the damage had already been done which may be one of the reasons why Woods was let go because he had no control over his unit. Schwartz brings stability to an organization that desperately needs to clean house if they want to be better next year.
