Throughout an NFL football game, it’s common for players to get tired, fatigued or banged up resulting in them not performing at peak performance. But new Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has a way to combat that on the defensive line.

This week, Schwartz explained that he wants to rotate players regularly so they’re able to perform at their best when they’re on the field. Schwartz likened his rotation to relief pitchers who are able to bring their best stuff for a short period of time before getting replaced by the next guy.

“We’ll roll through eight, maybe even nine guys at times trying to keep guys fresh and keep ’em throwing a 100-miles-per-hour fastballs,” Schwartz said according to the Akron Beacon-Journal. “You guys will get tired of my baseball analogies, but a lot of the D-line is a lot throwing relief in the major leagues now. These guys coming in from the ‘pen throwing a 100, 101. . . . The tempo that we want those guys to play, we’re going to need to rotate fresh troops in.”

It’s certainly an interesting approach. Even if it means fewer snaps for the team’s top players, it should mean that everyone is performing their best when they are on the field.
