The Cleveland Browns have had a head-scratching approach to the quarterback position this offseason. The Browns traded for Kenny Pickett, signed Joe Flacco, and drafted Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
Then, after every quarterback other than Flacco dealt with injuries over training camp, the Browns added former Pro Bowler Tyler Huntley into the mix. Then the Browns dealt with everything from more injuries to accusations that the franchise was trying to sabotage Sanders, which head coach Kevin Stefanski addressed directly.
“I’m committed to his development, just like all of our rookies,” Stefanski responded, according to Awful Announcing. “We’ll continue to focus on getting our guys better. That’s what we will stay committed to, and that’s what’s important to me.”
Cleveland eventually named Flacco the starter and cut Huntley, leaving four arms in the position group. However, earlier this week the team elected to trade Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Shockingly, it didn’t take long for Cleveland to get back up to four, as the franchise came to terms with Pickett’s replacement on Wednesday, per one league insider.
“Quarterback Bailey Zappe is signing with the #Browns, per source. Most likely practice squad. Joins Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders in the QB room,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“The Browns are one confusing team,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Cleveland has ZERO idea what they’re doing with their QBs. Its why I say talent is where Cleveland goes to die. Their ownership sucks, their leadership sucks, and their plan sucks,” one fan added.
“Next week we will see Zappe as Qb3 and Shadeur is QB4 . They want to further bury him in case Flacco stinks it up or gets hurt then they play Gabriel and we all know how that will go. Ppl will call for Shadeur. To combat sign Zappe so Shadeur wont come in and play better than DG,” someone else wrote.
The Browns are certainly taking an interesting approach to things.
