Pat McAfee is pretty good punter, a solid stand-up comedian and apparently, quite the philanthropist.

McAfee, the Colts punter, paid the electricity bills of 83 Indianapolis Power and Light customers Friday.

The Indianapolis Star’s Gregg Doyel got the full story:

Just spoke to an IPL source, who told me how this came together. McAfee told the electric company he wanted to cover an hour of the “pay in person” line. Probably the busiest hour of the week: Late Friday afternoon. Payday. Any IPL customer who came through the line Friday from 4-5 p.m. was told their money was no good; their bill had been paid. The customers on a payment plan? Their amount due was set to zero.

According to Doyel, McAfee spent about $18,000 in total.

This is a pretty cool gesture by McAfee, who seems like a pretty cool guy overall. The former West Virginia punter is in his seventh professional season, all with Indianapolis, and currently ranks sixth in the NFL in gross punting yards. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014.

In his spare time, McAfee is an aspiring stand-up comedian with a pretty delightful Twitter account.

For what it’s worth, McAfee signed a five-year, $14 million contract in 2014, so he’s not exactly hurting for cash, but spending $18,000 on strangers’ electric bills goes above and beyond regardless.
