Since the Washington Commanders season ended, it has become clear that the team intends to move forward with the young Sam Howell as the team’s starting quarterback with head coach Ron Rivera recently making that clear in an interview. And even despite the team hiring new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, it sounds like that plan isn’t going to change.

According to NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Commanders are still expecting to enter the offseason with Sam Howell as their top quarterback and won’t pursue another potential starter in free agency.

“Rivera said on PFT Live that Sam Howell enters the offseason program as QB1, that they won’t pursue a veteran starter, and that they will try to add a veteran backup,” Florio wrote on Pro Football Talk. “That was said before Rivera hired an offensive coordinator. In the aftermath of the hiring of Eric Bieniemy to fill that role, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the strategy has not changed.”

It remains to be seen how exactly Bieniemy will change the Commanders’ offense after he helped lead Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs to two Super Bowl titles. But it’s clear that there won’t be a quarterback change.
