Since Dak Prescott injured his thumb in the Dallas Cowboys‘ opening game loss against Tampa Bay, speculation begin that he would return within a month. At least, that’s what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was saying and hoping.

However, it appears that Prescott’s return may not come as quickly as Jones hoped, according to Ian Rapoport.

“He is still focusing on getting the swelling down. Then he has to work on how well he can grip a football,” Rapoport said on Sunday. “Simply guys, the bone has to heal, and the Cowboys are not going to put their franchise quarterback in harm’s way.”

The earliest Prescott will return is October 16, per Rapoport.

That’s news to a lot of Cowboy fans’ ears because Jones was basically convinced that Prescott would be back in early October.

That may have changed also after the Cowboys, behind Cooper Rush, beat the Cincinnati Bengals. Rush played well enough that it may have allowed Prescott more time to heal than many expected.

If Rush and the Cowboys’ defense can continue to hold the car in the road until Prescott returns, the Cowboys should be fine. But October 16 is still a long way to go and anything can happen between now and then.
