This was supposed to be a get-right season for the Dallas Cowboys under head coach Matt Eberflus after missing the playoffs a season ago. Instead, save for a miracle, the Cowboys are going to miss the playoffs for the second-straight season. It’d be easier to show grace to the first-year head coach had he not stated plainly before the season started.

“We’re gonna win. And when we win, our coaching staff is going to get raided. People are going to come after our coaches, because we’re gonna win,” he said.

However, team owner and manager Jerry Jones has not been pleased with how this season has gone, and it’s hard to believe other franchises will try to poach from Dallas’s staff, considering Jones isn’t even showing support for it publicly, especially in light of how the defense is performing under defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

The Cowboys’ defense was picked apart by Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy on Sunday.

“We let their quarterback have a big day on us,” Jones said Tuesday, per Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “That wasn’t the plan. We could have used more pressure, without question, at different times. The result was that we let him make some pretty significant plays out there, plus, he played pretty well. It seems like we’re always saying that about these [opposing] quarterbacks. Some of them hadn’t played as well, but when they play us, they play better. I think that’s telling, too.”

“Candidly, just to be very up front about it,” Jones said, “I think if we could have gotten this defense in better shape earlier, that we could be sitting here with the kind of wins that would’ve not had us in this tight spot.”

Now, the Cowboys are making a serious change to how Eberflus goes about coaching the team.

“Matt Eberflus said he will move to the coaches both from the sideline for the final three games. He said he’s done it before and the different perspective should help,” reported Todd Archer of ESPN on Thursday.

It’ll be interesting to see if the change pans out for Dallas or if it’s too little too late.
