NFL training camp is often where players win and lose their positions on an NFL roster. And it looks like the Dallas Cowboys have made a decision that could impact their starting kicker position.

The Cowboys are seemingly uneasy about their kicking situation at training camp and decided on Tuesday to bring in a familiar face to fill out their roster.

According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, the team is “set to” bring in veteran kicker Brett Maher, and will release undrafted rookie kicker Jonathan Garibey in a corresponding move.

Dallas has a long history with Maher, first signing the veteran kicker in 2013 to play in the preseason only to be released when kicker Dan Bailey returned from injury.

The team then took a chance on him again in 2018, and he supplanted Bailey as the starting kicker.

He went on to play for the team in both the 2018 and 2019 seasons where he saw varying success, making 80.6 percent and then 66.7 percent of his kicks in consecutive years.

Maher’s last stint in the NFL came last season with the New Orleans Saints where he had the best year of his career, making 88.9 percent of his kicks, which ranked just outside of the top ten in all of football in that statistic in eight games with the team.

The veteran kicker has had a long journey in his kicking career that involves 14 separate stints (some with the same team) across both the NFL and the CFL since starting his professional football career.

This will mark the 15th stint, and he will need to beat out former CFL kicker Lirim Hajrullahu for the starting kicker position if he wants to make his third stay in Dallas a lengthy one.
