The Dallas Cowboys released veteran wide receiver Antonio Callaway days after his arrest stemming from a routine traffic stop in Florida.
The Cowboys signed Callaway, originally a fourth-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, to the practice squad in November. He signed a futures contract in January but did not appear in the final two OTA sessions open to the media, according to ESPN.
According to South Florida sports journalist Andy Slater, Callaway was a passenger in a car that was originally pulled over for speeding. When the officer requested identification from everyone in the car, Callaway complied, and the ensuing records search revealed he had a warrant for driving with a suspended license and refusing to pay the attached fine.
The Browns originally drafted Callaway, then a product of the Florida Gators football program, in 2018. As Fox News notes, Callaway notched 43 receptions for 586 yards and five touchdowns in 11 starts during his rookie season. The following season, however, the NFL suspended Callaway for four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy against marijuana.
Callaway also had stints with the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs before the Cowboys signed him. He now becomes a free agent capable of signing with any team in the league.
