The Dallas Cowboys started training camp Saturday, and they did so by putting together a powerful tribute.

The team honored those who were killed in the July 7 shootings in Dallas by walking out onto the field arm-in-arm with owner Jerry Jones, Dallas police Chief David Brown, and family members of four of the five officers who were killed in the July 7 shooting.

The arm-in-arm walk was part of a set of events put on by the Cowboys that also included a speech from Brown to the team.

“I talked about responsibility and playing a role in our society as pro athletes, to have a voice in the conversation about race, to have a voice in the conversation about communities and police departments and police-involved shootings,” Brown said. “I think that people need to hear, from all parts of society, a discussion on race.”

Dallas also revealed decals that it will wear on its helmets that signify Saturday’s events.

The Cowboys were praised by many, including Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings.

“I would like to say thank you to the Dallas Cowboys for lifting a city up today,” Rawlings told reporters after the brief ceremony. “Those families, those young kids — to be arm-in-arm with a quarterback, a coach or a big lineman — they’ll remember that for the rest of their lives.”

The Cowboys have managed to make an impact with their actions on Saturday. Hopefully these salutes will continue into the future.
