The Dallas Cowboys may be in need of a backup quarterback to add to the depth chart, but do not expect Johnny Manziel to be getting any phone calls.

The need for a backup quarterback for the Cowboys came when Kellen Moore went down with a broken ankle during training camp this summer. The injury will keep the former Boise State quarterback out for the entire regular season, meaning the Cowboys are on the lookout for another passer just in case they should see their starting franchise quarterback, Tony Romo, suffer an injury that could derail the season just as it did a year ago. And given the supposed interest in Manziel out of texas A&M that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones allegedly had, it would seem to make sense the Cowboys could be a potential landing spot for the troubled quarterback. And it’s not as though off-field issues have prevented the Cowboys from adding a player to their roster before, unless maybe they have learned a lesson now.

Whatever the case may be, the Cowboys will continue searching and evaluating backup quarterback options, and Cowboys executive vice president and COO Stephen Jones told CBS Sports Radio there is no chance Manziel will be among those the team considers.

“No, there’s no chance. Obviously Johnny needs to get his hands around his life. He needs to do the things that make him a good person off the field, I think, before he can ever have any chance of being successful in our league. He’s a guy obviously from Texas that we’ve all followed and had an amazing career there at A&M. Unfortunately, he has some things that are holding him back not only as a football player, but as a person in life. We certainly hope he gets his hands around that because he’s obviously a guy that’s had some very unique successes in his life. When he is able to have his hands around some of his issues that he has off the field, then it usually translates into a success for him on the field. But I hope he is able to get his hands around his life, and at some point if he does, I’m sure he’ll get another chance. But at the moment, it certainly won’t be in Dallas.”

A chance to join the Cowboys has certainly not gone unnoticed by quarterbacks looking for a job. Just recently, Mike Vick voiced his interest in joining the Cowboys. In the meantime, Dallas will hope Romo stays healthy. If not, it could thrust rookie Dak Prescott, another SEC quarterback, into action. Of the two, the odds are probably better than Vick gets a chance to wear the star on his helmet before Manziel does, unless Jerry Jones steps in and makes the call himself, which is always within the realm of possibility.

Manziel’s story is a fascinating one as he continues to live the party life with no apparent regard for his football-playing career, or whatever may be left of it. When the Cleveland Browns give up on you, there really are few places to turn in the NFL. Manziel will have to keep being an all-star at the clubs, which is probably fine by him anyway.
