The Washington Commanders are not having the sort of season they expected after reaching the NFC Championship in last year behind the impressive rookie season of quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Unfortunately for the Commanders, 2025 has been a disaster. Sunday’s blowout loss to the Washington Commanders dropped the team to 3-7 on the season. The Commanders’ offense has been decimated by injuries to its star players, including Daniels, but things have also gone horribly on the defensive side of the ball. Sunday’s loss saw the Lions have their best offensive day of the season, accumulating over 500 yards of total offense.

Now, Washington is making a major change to the coaching staff, according to one prominent insider.

“Commanders HC Dan Quinn told reporters that he now will take over as defensive coordinator and call Washington’s defense,” reported ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Fans reacted to Joe Whitt Jr. being relieved of play-calling duties on social media.

“Dan Quinn as defensive coordinator too… question: is this genius or just another case of a HC trying to control everything?” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“That’s a strong accountability move from Quinn. When a head coach takes over play-calling, it signals urgency – he’s betting on his own defensive pedigree to reset the tone and salvage the season,” someone else added.

“After all these bad defensive games he now finally realizes he should takeover lol,” one fan added.

It’ll be interesting to see how the move pans out for the Commanders.
