The New York Giants are in quite a difficult roster situation this offseason as both quarterback Daniel Jones and star running back Saquon Barkley are set to become unrestricted free agents if they aren’t franchise tagged or don’t sign an extension with the Giants. And given that only one franchise tag is available, at least one of them will need to sign a new deal if they’re both going to return next year. But it’s looking like it’ll take a lot to sign Daniel Jones.
While the Giants are reportedly “hopeful” that they can get a new deal done before next week’s franchise tag deadline, there’s a reason why the sides have had such a hard time coming to an agreement: Jones reportedly wants more than $45 million per year.
“This should explain why they’re still not close: league sources tell the Daily News that Jones’ representatives are asking for more than $45 million per year on a multi-year contract extension,” Pat Leonard of The New York Daily News wrote on Friday morning. “That’s over $12.6 million more than what Schoen could get Jones for in 2023 on the $32.4 million non-exclusive franchise tag.”
That’s an absolutely massive contract for Jones to seek from the Giants, and the NFL world had plenty to say about it on Friday.

Maybe DJ is asking for $45 over the course of his deal 😂
I love him but this is a death sentence for the Giants if they pay him that https://t.co/m3VVnV6hjD

It’s worth noting that only five quarterbacks in the entire NFL make $45 million or more per year: Aaron Rodgers ($50.2 million), Russell Wilson ($49 million), Kyler Murray ($46.1 million), Deshaun Watson ($46 million) and Patrick Mahomes ($45 million).
We’ll have to see if the two sides can come to a deal.
