The rumblings that Davante Adams would eventually reunite with Aaron Rodgers started when the 39-year-old quarterback announced that he intended to join the New York Jets. Since then, they’ve only begun to intensify, even though the Las Vegas Raiders haven’t budged an inch.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Jets called the Raiders prior to last Tuesday’s trade deadline and gauged Las Vegas interest in completing a blockbuster trade for the All-Pro wide receiver. The Raiders, of course, didn’t budge, which is interesting considering that the team elected to fire head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler later that evening.

Schefter indicated that the Jets not only wanted to reunite Adams with Rodgers, but they also wanted to add another wide receiver to complement Garrett Wilson and send a message to the rest of the league that they were doing everything in their power to win, despite the loss of Rodgers.

Here’s more from Schefter:

Trading for Adams was a move the Jets had debated, discussed and planned for throughout the summer, sources told ESPN, as New York was waiting for the right moment to reach out to Las Vegas to land the three-time All-Pro.

But the Raiders, less than a day removed from a Monday night loss to the Lions and just hours before firing coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, told the Jets they were not interested in trading Adams, just as another source had said earlier Tuesday that there “was no chance in hell” that Las Vegas would trade away the six-time Pro Bowler.

Those in the NFL were quick to react to the news that the Jets checked in on trading for Adams prior to the trade deadline.

It seems almost inevitable at this point that Adams won’t eventually end up in a Jets uniform.
