Every Denver Broncos player, including franchise quarterback Russell Wilson, will wear a helmet without a team log during preseason training activities, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Some football coaches use that process to make their players “earn” their position on the team. But that’s not the case for Payton and the Broncos. It’s more of making the equipment team’s job easier.

“There’s nothing significant about that other than — it’s really just simply a functional decision of, ‘Let’s make sure we got the tape on the front with their last name,'” Payton said last week, according to Broncos Wire. “Then training camp will start the same way. At some point, we’ll put the logos on the helmets. It’s probably just because that’s what [I’ve] always done and it’s easier for the equipment room.

“It’s not like, ‘Hey, you haven’t earned it,’ because these logos aren’t going to be on any of them this whole offseason. There’s just no reason. I think everyone knows they’re all Denver Broncos players. There’s no confusion. I think more just practical.”

Broncos fans will hope the new offseason regimen leads to better results for their team. After trading for Wilson last season, the Broncos finished 5-12, good enough for last place in the AFC West.
