Fixing the play of quarterback Russell Wilson will be one of the top priorities of new Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton.

The Broncos are looking to right the ship after a disastrous 2022 season that saw them finish last in the AFC West and fire their head coach, Nathaniel Hackett.

Payton has sent clear messages to Wilson early in his tenure. Payton said that Wilson won’t be working with his longtime private quarterback coach during the season. This week, Payton also took a playful jab at Wilson’s golf cart snafu that saw the quarterback flip his cart while enjoying a round of golf.

“I don’t want the players to feel like they’re pulling into the parking lot coming to football practice in April,” Payton said, according to Golf Digest. “That’s just not happening. So it’s great to see these guys around. Hopefully, we can keep the golf carts upright. But uh, yeah, no meetings, just weight room and running.”

Payton is an avid golfer himself, so he understands the risks of navigating a golf cart around the kind of bunkers that caught Wilson by surprised.

While this was only a playful jab, it shows that not even a highly paid franchise quarterback like Wilson is above being the butt of a joke under the new regime.
