The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers kicked off the 2025 NFL season on Thursday night in the league’s annual Hall of Fame preseason game. However, the Chargers looked much sharper than the Lions in the contest, beating Detroit 34-7.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell was not happy with his team’s performance and did not mince words after the game.
“You want to win the game, you also want to play really well, and we didn’t do that,” Campbell said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I would expect us to play much better next week.”
Campbell wasn’t pleased with the Lions’ turnovers and indicated that players who turn the ball over aren’t likely to make the roster.
“We turned it over five times and we didn’t get any takeaways,” Campbell said. “You’re wearing Lions gear, you’ve got to take care of the ball, or it’s going to be hard to keep you around.”
Fans reacted to the harsh words on social media.
“Maybe the Lions take a step back this year But I still expect them to beat the Packers and Bears when the season starts I’m not a believer that this division is tough Lions no Super Bowl, Packers went to 1 in 30 years, Bears won last in 1985, Vikings, 50 years since a Super Bowl,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Got a bad feeling his message to his team is getting old. 8-9 coming,” someone else predicted.
“Now we will see if he can really coach this year without Johnson and Glenn,” another fan wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Lions do this season after losing their offensive and defensive coordinators to head coaching jobs with other franchises.
