Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was a top candidate for the head coaching vacancies with both the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks. But in a pretty surprising turn of events, it doesn’t sound like he’ll be taking either job.

As reported by league insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has decided to stop pursuing head coaching opportunities this offseason and will remain with the Detroit Lions for at least one more season.

“#Lions OC Ben Johnson informed the #Seahawks and #Commanders that he’s staying in Detroit, per sources.
Johnson is still only 37 and will be a hot head coaching candidate again next year. But first, he wants to take another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Detroit,” Pelissero wrote in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

According to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, this could be because Johnson’s asking price was too high.

“Ben Johnson was not the head-coaching lock that people thought and his asking price spooked some teams, per sources,” Schefter said in a post.

In any case, it’s pretty big news for the Lions as they get to keep their offensive coordinator for at least one more season.
