Mandatory minicamp is underway for the Seattle Seahawks but wide receiver DK Metcalf is not participating.

According to Ian Rapoport, Metcalf wasn’t present on Tuesday as contract talks between the two sides have yet to produce a new deal.

The wide receiver remains in Los Angeles where he continues to rehab from foot surgery. Metcalf worked out with Colin Kaepernick a few months back when the two were both there.

Metcalf did reportedly show up for voluntary workouts earlier this offseason, so his decision to skip mandatory minicamp clearly seems to be about sending a message to the Seahawks about his contract. The team could fine him if it’s deemed that he was not excused, though doing so likely might exacerbate the breakdown in negotiations.

The Seahawks aren’t in much of a position to push back on Metcalf at the moment. The 2020 Second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler has generated 216 catches, 3,170 receiving yards, and 29 touchdowns in three seasons with the team.

Now that the team will be without Russell Wilson and their quarterback situation appears sketchy, it remains to be seen if Metcalf truly wants to stick around in Seattle or would prefer to focus on finding a new home with a more stable quarterback throwing in his direction.

In the meantime, the news that Metcalf is missing mandatory minicamp certainly got the NFL world talking on Tuesday, especially with those assuming that this all ends in a trade.

We’ll see if this all ends with Metcalf wearing Seahawks green or perhaps a different shade of green this season.
