NFL legend Tom Brady took the field in the Fanatics Flag Football Classic to play quarterback for the first time since retiring and got his “competitive juices flowing.” Although Brady didn’t win the three-team event, he showed flashes of what won him three MVPs and four Super Bowls in his NFL playing career.
It would appear that Brady, who is also a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, really was itching to get back onto the field, as he revealed to CNBC’s Alex Sherman that he inquired about taking the field as a player-owner.
The league, Brady said, was a lot less keen on the idea than he was.
“I actually have inquired, and they don’t like that idea very much,” Brady said. “We explored a lot of different things, and I’m very happily retired. Let me just say that, too.”
An NFL spokesperson revealed that Brady would first need to divest from the Raiders’ ownership group if he wants to unretire again.
“In addition, there would be salary cap issues involving a player/owner,” the spokesperson said, via CNBC.
In his role with the Raiders, which he has apparently decided will supersede his putting the pads back on, the future Hall of Famer helps the front office with personnel and coaching decisions.
“I’m a minority owner. So, when you’re that, there’s really no job description. I don’t have really a daily role,” he said. “You know, my phone call is always available to everybody who needs it. I want to see everyone succeed, be their best, bring a winning kind of a culture to Las Vegas — to bring the Raiders back to glory. I’d love to be a part of it.”
