It’s well-known that former President Donald Trump once owned the New Jersey Generals of the USFL, but did you know he once had the opportunity to buy the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys?
As the story goes, then-owner Clint Murchison Jr. was looking to sell the team and Trump had the chance to buy America’s Team for just $50 million. He decided to pass and instead bought the Generals. In a 1984 interview with the New York Times, he explained why.
“I feel sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy the Dallas Cowboys,” Trump said. “It’s a no-win situation for him, because if he wins, well, so what, they’ve won through the years, and if he loses, which seems likely because they’re having troubles, he’ll be known to the world as a loser.”
This week, the Dallas Cowboys became the first NFL team to be valued at $8 billion and we’re guessing that current owner Jerry Jones doesn’t feel like too much of a loser, even though his franchise hasn’t won a Super Bowl since the mid-90s. We’re guessing Donald Trump would have been okay with that deal.
Naturally, the NFL world had some fun with Trump’s keen predictive skills, especially considering what a disaster his USFL ownership tenure ended up being.

We’ll meet back here in a few years when the Cowboys are worth $10 billion and have another good laugh at Trump’s expense.
