Contrary to what you might expect (or perhaps not, depending on your perception of Bostonians), Donald Trump dominated the Massachusetts Republican primary Tuesday, scoring 49.3 percent of the vote, 31 points ahead of his closest rival.

So how did Trump do so well in the Bay State? According to the man himself, it was all about an endorsement from a certain local hero. Via the New York Times:

“Honestly, in that part of the world, a reference like Tom Brady saying Trump’s the biggest winner, Trump is a friend of mine, that makes an incredible difference,” Mr. Trump said in a telephone interview on Wednesday night. “Tom Brady is a great friend of mine. He’s a winner and he likes winners. He was very helpful to us in Massachusetts on Tuesday.”

Brady has indeed been a pretty outspoken fan of Trump’s, though he has not officially endorsed the candidate. Brady made headlines last fall when he displayed a “Make America Great Again” hat, a replica of the one Trump wears on the campaign trail, in his locker. When asked about Trump, Brady said he consider the businessman a friend and admires his accomplishments.

Trump reportedly invoked Brady’s name a lot while campaigning in New Hampshire, and having the quarterback’s support probably didn’t hurt in Massachusetts either.

Then again… are people really voting for president based on who their favorite athletes play golf with? Because if so, America could be in bigger trouble than any of us realizes.
