The Philadelphia Eagles entered the NFL postseason hoping to defend their Super Bowl title and repeat as champions. Unfortunately, that’s not how it went, and the team has fired a coach as a result.
The Eagles suffered a 23-19 loss at home to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs, ending their season in disappointing fashion.
The loss was highlighted by offensive struggles after the team failed to move the ball and score points consistently throughout the season. As a result of the loss and the season-long struggles on the offensive side of the ball, the Eagles decided to make a coaching change.
On Wednesday, the Eagles officially announced that the team had fired Kevin Patullo from his role of offensive coordinator.
“I have decided to make a change at offensive coordinator,” Nick Sirianni wrote in a statement via ESPN. “I met with Kevin today to discuss the difficult decision, as he is a great coach who has my utmost respect. He has been integral to this team’s success over the last five years, not only to the on-field product but behind the scenes as a valued leader for our players and organization. I have no doubt he will continue to have a successful coaching career.
“Ultimately, when we fall short of our goals that responsibility lies on my shoulders,” Sirianni added.
Patullo served as the team’s pass game coordinator and associate head coach last season. He was promoted to offensive coordinator to replace Kellen Moore.
It’s possible that Patullo could remain on the team’s coaching staff in a different role, but it is now clear that he will not be the team’s offensive coordinator.
