In the midst of the Josh Brown incident with the NFL, New York Giants’ owner John Mara made some pretty poor comments about what his stance was on the situation.

In the aftermath of Mara’s comments, Annie Apple, mother of Giants’ rookie Eli Apple, took to Twitter originally to express her disapproval of Mara’s remarks.

Days after her Tweet storm criticizing Mara, Annie Apple wrote an extremely emotional column for Sports Illustrated where she detailed her experience with domestic violence and expanded on her criticism of the Giants and the NFL.

The same day Annie made those comments, her son Eli was asked about her response.

“I was like, ‘godd–n,’” Apple said. “But she’s her own person. She’s gonna do whatever she wants to do. She’s gonna talk about this. I’ve just got to understand that. It’s cool.

“My mom’s very vocal and that topic is very important to her, so I can understand where she was coming from,” Apple continued. “But at the same time in my position I just have to do my part and play football and do what I can do.”

The 21-year-old also stated that he has spoke with people within the Giants’ organization about how he will continue to do his job despite his mother’s comments.

“I’ll be good on that front,” Apple said of his relationship with the organization. “I talked to them, let them know my mom, her reactions like that sometimes are like that, she’s her own person, she’s gonna do that, so I’ve just got to do my job. I just made sure I talked to everybody, man, just let them know, whoever is concerned.”

While Eli can say he and the organization are in good standing with one another, it’s hard to ignore how harsh Annie’s comments were about the owner of the team.

“The comments made by John Mara, owner of the New York Giants, were insensitive, dismissive and callous,” Apple wrote. “How are you a so-called champion of domestic violence but lack basic compassion for a victim? Yes, this man signs my son’s checks as I’ve been reminded on Twitter. Mr. Mara owns the New York Giants. He doesn’t own Annie Apple. Wrong is wrong. And Mr. Mara’s comments were unapologetically wrong and hit at a raw place.”

The whole situation continues to look worse and worse not just for the Giants but the NFL as a whole. Numerous reports have come out showing the NFL had multiple opportunities to learn the necessary information to punish Brown for much longer, but didn’t.

It’ll be interesting to see what Eli and the Giants do going forward as Annie has made a good point about why the team and league are in the wrong. Furthermore, it’ll also be interesting to see how long this tension lasts while Brown is still on the team’s payroll.
