The NFL is no stranger to the surprise retirements of its star players. From Barry Sanders to Andrew Luck, early retirements are the reality of such a brutal and violent sport, and the toll it takes on its players’ bodies.
On Tuesday, another star and former All-Pro announced that he was joining the ranks of the early retirees.
“As I hang up my cleats, I’m filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that’s shaped me in every way,” said Saints star Tyrann Mathieu posted on his Instagram.
“From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community.
“To every coach who believed in me, every teammate who battled beside me, and every fan who showed up, cheered, and rode with me through the highs and lows, thank you. You gave me strength when I needed it most, and your love carried me farther than I ever imagined.
“I hope I made you proud out there. This isn’t goodbye — it’s just the next chapter.”
Fans reacted to Mathieu’s retirement on social media.
“From getting kicked off his college team. To helping start a new role for the Safety position. Football was better with Mathieu playing,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“One of the game’s greatest nicknames! In his prime, the Honey Badger was so much fun to watch,” one fan added.
“He will go down as one of the greatest football players of all time,” another fan added.
It’s sad to see Mathieu walk away, but hopefully he enjoys his retirement.
