After battling with Geno Smith for the Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback spot last offseason, Drew Lock is back with the team for another season, this time as Smith’s clear backup quarterback. And while Smith is happy to have him back for another year, it sounds like he also wants some bigger and better things for his friend.
During a press conference this week, Geno Smith made it clear that having Lock back for another season is “bittersweet,” because while he enjoys having him on the team, he also knows that Lock is fully capable of being a starting quarterback somewhere else.
“It’s a bittersweet thing because I know he’s a starter and I know he can go and do great things,” Smith said according to Pro Football Talk. “I want him to go get that opportunity somewhere but when he’s in the room with me, we are going to push each other. He makes me better, hopefully, I make him better as a player. We have a great relationship, and I was happy to be able to continue that. When he gets his opportunity, he is going to kill it.”
After this season, Lock will get his chance to compete for a starting quarterback role elsewhere. But for now, he’ll be with Smith for one more year.
