The Las Vegas Raiders are looking to turn the corner and establish a winning culture after what has felt like years of mediocrity. To achieve this, Las Vegas welcomed the NFL’s winningest player, Tom Brady, into its ownership group last season.
Since joining the organization, Brady has had a prominent role in the decision-making process, helping both in the hiring of head coach Pete Carroll, and the acquisition of quarterback Geno Smith.
Apparently, the team really likes what it has in Smith, per one prominent NFL insider.
“QB Geno Smith is signing a two-year, $85.5 million extension that includes $66.5 million in guaranteed money with the Raiders, per source. Smith is now contractually tied to Las Vegas through the 2027 season,” reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Smith then followed up his initial report.
“To be clear, it’s a two-year, $75 million extension worth up to $85.5 million for Geno Smith, who now cashes in in Las Vegas.”
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Yup. Another signing that’ll put the raiders behind the winning curve another 2 seasons,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I can see him playing well in Vegas. Still a massive contract either way,” one fan added.
“To be clear, this is a huge overpay for an average qb who’s 40 years old,” wrote someone else.
It’ll be interesting to see if Smith can perform at the level his contract is asking of him.
